History

      The city of  Yirgalem is said to have been founded in 1924 E.C by Rasdesta. At that moment, Rasdesta listened to the sceneThere were various reasons why Ras Desta listened and decided to make Sidama the seat of the province Of these, the three most prominent are the Sidama tribes, namely Shebedino (Fekisa) Gerbicho and Aleta 3. It was an average connecting point and also considering the centrality of the city. It is also known as Yirgalem because the three local tribes at the time were economically disadvantaged. It is said that they gave it a name, saying, "Peace be upon you."  The city was recognized by the municipality in 1933 E.C  and was included in the master plan in 1959 E.C

        Yirgalem was occupied by Italian December 1 1936 during their campaign against the remaining army of sidama under Ras Desta Damtewu. The town was capital of sidama.

         Yirgalem alternative names include Yirgalem,Abosto is town in southern Ethiopia. Surrounded by River Woyima and Gidawo. It is located 260 kilometers south of Addis Ababa and 40 kilometers south of Awasa town in the Sidama Region. The town has latitude and longitude 6°45’N 38°25’E and an elevation of 1776 meters
